Germany – Just Can’t Wait!

Inside, our Kids’ Club outreach team was setting things up.  Outside, kids had started to pile up at the door.  As most of the team pulled together in a side room to talk and pray for a few moments before we began, I headed towards the door and the growing number of kids waiting out there.  As soon as I opened the door, one of the recent newcomers, Daniel, showed me his watch. “I got a paper in my mailbox today that said this starts at 3:30.”  I responded, “Cool, and you came.  That’s great!”

“But it’s 3:34 and it hasn’t started!”  (To be honest, he looked a little offended.  My stifled laugh probably didn’t help.)

I replied as diplomatically as I could, “I’m sure we’ll start in a minute or two.  They’re probably just finishing getting ready.”  “Well, I need you to go in there and check to be sure.  The paper said 3:30 and it’s past that.”

I chalked up another mark under my mental category, “German stereotypes fulfilled.”  My own kids didn’t even know what hour it was and Daniel is upset that we were running 4 minutes late…as if this 8-year-old had another appointment that day.

Then Kevin, another recent newcomer, looked through the window of the side room and saw 8 adults sitting around a table with their heads bowed and eyes closed.  He shouted, “But they’re all in there sleeping!”  I couldn’t contain a laugh at that one.  Not knowing how to begin on a discussion of prayer in the 2 minutes left before we started, I told him that maybe they all just needed quick naps before Kids’ Club so that they would have enough energy to keep up with the kids.  A minute later we were all inside and I saw why they couldn’t wait to get in…they loved being there!

What a joy to bless these kids with fun and loving relationships, and a glimpse of God’s love!
