From Iceland to Italy

Dear Friends:

Just a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Iceland and Italy. Outside of fact that both their names begin with the letter I, these two nations don’t have much in common.

When I arrived in Iceland at the end of August, they said they were having summer. It was 13 degrees centigrade, which is about 54 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, they were dressed in short-sleeved shirts and concerned about sunburn.

I had the opportunity to visit with our missionary staff members there, who are doing an excellent job. Approximately 15 years ago they went there, and God gave them a burden and vision to launch a radio ministry. They are now touching the whole island nation of Iceland of over 300,000 people. Lindin Radio has made a huge impact, not only on the non-believing community, but also on the believers, being a real focal point for Christians to gather around. They’ve blessed the churches, Teen Challenge, and other works on the island. I had the opportunity to have some radio time and share a testimony, and out of that came a phone call from an Icelander. The caller, who is living in Germany, heard me say I lived in Austria for 17 years and wanted to connect with me. Modern means of technology and what we have at our disposal are wonderful. We thank God for this small island nation that is hearing the good news through radio.

From there I went to Italy and, at the invitation of the superintendent of the Assemblies of God of Italy, went down to Calabria. We were right at the boot of Italy—right at the ball of the foot. We were received extremely warmly and had the opportunity to preach at a wonderful church with over 22 pastors from that area. The superintendent and other leadership were involved. It was a tremendous time of getting to know the new leadership in Italy and knitting our hearts together to believe God for a strategy to reach this large nation of over 50 million Italians. We have a long-running history with the Assemblies of God of Italy dating back to a document signed in 1947 by our leadership and also by the Secretary of State at that time, George C. Marshall. So our history is very well intertwined, and we’re thankful for this.

The Italian Assemblies of God operates seven camps, a retirement home, an orphanage, and a Bible school. They have over 1000 churches and are dong a wonderful work for the Kingdom.

Please pray for Iceland and for Italy. We know that God wants to do much more than we can think or imagine.

Thanks also for praying about the exchange rate of the American dollar and the euro. We’re receiving predictions that it will get worse before it gets better, and we need God’s intervention there.
