—Small Things Produce Big Results--
For the past several weeks I have had the opportunity to travel in Europe. My travels took me to France, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. I am glad to report that in each of these countries it was evident that God was at work.
I would like to report particularly on two services I had, one in France and one in Slovakia. The service in France was located in the southern part of France in the city of Bordeaux. Bordeaux is a beautiful city not far from the Atlantic Ocean and hosts a large number of travelers, whom we would call Gypsies, during the winter months. There are 350,000 Gypsies in France who travel throughout the country and from there to different parts of Europe. In France the Gypsies have their own Bible school with about 130 students enrolled. They have 135 churches that have been established in some of the main French cities. The Gypsy work that they have sponsored extends to nearly 40 countries, and their mission, life, and light supports 30 missionaries working in eastern countries, including Russia, Central Asia, and Turkey. Approximately 140,000 adult baptized Gypsies live in France.
I had the opportunity to preach in one of their churches in Bordeaux and the congregation numbered 150-200 in a small room on a Tuesday evening—the place was very crowded. Many Gypsies winter there who are involved during the rest of the year in circus work. I discovered in a conversation after the service that many families have been involved in circus ministry for over 100 years. It was a wonderful time to see the work of God and His grace among this beautiful community of people in Europe. Many of you would not know that the Gypsies of Europe are definitely ostracized and despised by mainline Europeans, but God in His great grace has done a great work in their lives in France and all around Europe. It was a great privilege to preach in that church.
We now shoot across Central Europe to the far eastern end of Slovakia to the city of Košice. There in Košice the Lord began a work during the days of Communism that today is an exciting work of God. This city of over 250,000 people hosts one large Pentecostal church and several other smaller churches. The seed planted during the time of Communism has blossomed. When I preached there Sunday morning, over 500 adults were in the service and around 200 children in their program. There was a tremendous move of God with 100-150 people at the altar, seeking God for healing and the touch of God’s grace on their lives.
Several years ago the city was so appreciative of the church’s work in the community that they gave them a prime piece of property on a hill overlooking the city. They have built a magnificent structure to the glory of God in that place.
On the return flight home, I couldn’t help but think and compare the Gypsies, who were so despised, and the believers in Košice, who planted the church in faith during Communist rule—both are reaping incredible harvests. Zechariah 4:10 says, “Who despises the day of small things?” May we never! The Gypsy revival movement started with a French pastor praying for a young Gypsy who was given up for dead but the Lord intervened and healed. A church birthed in the secret dark places in Košice, Slovakia, is now a lighthouse in the community because of God’s great favor.
If God is at work in your life, do not despise the day of small beginnings.
God bless.
