 Speaking a Word in Due Season

Proverbs 15:23 says, “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth; And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” (ASV).

Allow me to give a personal illustration regarding this verse. For several months I had encountered significant spiritual warfare. I was feeling worthless in my walk with Christ and in my decision making. I was tired, hurting, and trying to keep up with my responsibilities of work and doing a good job in ministry. At the end of my own natural strength and reflecting on this battle one day, I realized I was running on empty. I cried out to God, because the victory was just not mine and I needed help.

One day after early morning prayer, I was going about my routine when I received a phone call with an unfamiliar area code. On the voicemail was a friend’s wife, who had received a word from God for me. She did not remember meeting me previously, but God placed my name on her heart. She began to intercede for me intensely and felt compelled to ask her husband, “Who is this Greg Mundis?” He told her I was a missionary, the regional director for Europe with the Assemblies of God. She said, “I don’t know why—I really don’t remember or know him—but God placed his name in my heart.” So she called and left the message for me.

Before I had a chance to call back, she called again and said God had particularly pressed on her heart to pray for me. When I heard the second voicemail, I called her. She asked if she indeed was being led by the Spirit, and I confirmed she was. She prayed a powerful word over me, a word that found lodging in my heart and mind and brought peace to my spirit. It enabled me to have a goodnight’s sleep, which I hadn’t had in a long time.

How important it is to speak a word in due season. How important it is to be led by the Spirit. The God of the universe, who knows me and what was going on in the battle of my mind and heart, prompted a woman who didn’t remember or know me, or my title or position, to begin interceding in a wonderful way.

I hope and pray that operating in this gift will increase among our Christian, Pentecostal, and charismatic family—that we would speak a word in due season and see the good it works.
