Director's Message
by Greg Mundis
Dear
Friends:
Are you “Doing” what you “Say?”
Dear Colleagues:
Turn the other cheek!
Many of us are aware that these are
the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:39. Are we all aware
of what the whole verse says? “But I tell you,
do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you
on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
Have you ever practiced this command
of Jesus? In the last few weeks, one of our missionaries
had the opportunity to demonstrate this through a very
hostile situation.
The story goes something like this.
Our missionary is in an environment that is not Christian-influenced,
and there is overt and covert antagonism and persecution
of Christians and their faith. In the small village
where he lives, a new ministry is developing and causing
a stir in the community. The missionary has been in
this community for some time and is well-trusted by
a real cross section of citizens for his integrity,
honesty, and compassion toward the people of the community.
The developing ministry that is causing
a rift prompted a young man to invite our missionary
out for a cup of coffee to talk about the situation.
(This is the normal custom in this particular culture.)
A few minutes into the discussion the young man’s
blood began to boil and “POW!” Our missionary
was smacked in the eye and began to bleed rather profusely.
Sitting at the next table were two policemen who immediately
apprehended the young man and transported the missionary
to the hospital.
What would you have done in this situation?
The missionary didn’t strike back. He didn’t
press charges. He pleaded for the young man who lost
his temper. An ensuing article appeared in the local
newspaper, and they wrote a complete story about “turning
the other cheek.” In this particular environment,
deeds mean as much, if not more, than words. Does our
practice match up with our presentation?
The missionary has made another huge
impact on the community, because his word and his deed
match up.
Thanks for praying for our missionaries!
Sincerely,
Greg Mundis
