Country Information :

        by Greg Mundis

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Springfield, Missouri!

What type of images come to your mind when you hear the word, "Yugoslavia?"
The most recent history would evoke images of war. This beautiful country was involved in a war with itself throughout the 1990s. The battlefields were once the federation of the states that made up this country. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo are names that recent history has etched in our minds.

Church! What kind of images come to one's mind when we say this word? Do we think of great cathedrals? Do we think of a television show on Sunday morning? Do we think of a little white building in a New England setting? Do we think of a group of people huddled together in a small living room?
The "church" comes in many different forms. Allow me to share with you some of the "churches" we have experienced in the last few weeks.

We just returned from a time of ministry in Yugoslavia/Serbia. We ministered to a Pentecostal pastor's conference in the capital city of Belgrade. Over 30 pastors came together (along with many of their wives) to share in this conference. They came from situations that would boggle our minds. The NATO forces bombed some of their cities last year. Others are struggling with small Pentecostal works in an environment that treats them as a cult or a sect. Yet all of them are a part of the church of Jesus Christ.

My wife Sandie and I also ministered to a Gypsy congregation in Leskovac. It was amazing! We drove three hours to this city in southern Yugoslavia/Serbia. The tent in which their church was meeting was "full to overflowing" upon our arrival. In fact, there were people standing outside of the tent to hear the message. (As a side note of interest-the Assemblies of God, in cooperation with the Gypsy movement in France, helped purchase this tent.) More than 800 Gypsies filled the tent to hear the gospel preached!

The church takes on different forms in this world. For instance, there is a Pentecostal church in Auschwitz, Poland. History tells us this was the largest concentration camp during the holocaust. In a place that could be considered a porthole of evil in the twentieth century, a congregation of believers is sharing their witness that Jesus is alive!

Thank you for taking time to read this month's issue of the Eye on Europe Update. We pray that each issue will continue to keep you updated on what is happening in Europe. It's exciting to know that Jesus is moving through our Assemblies of God personnel who work in cooperation with Pentecostal churches.

Remember . . . Jesus said, "I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it."

Sincerely,

Greg Mundis
