KID TO KID:
Bulgarian Orphans Hear The Gospel
Orphans Smiling

Red, gold, black and white are no longer just colors to the orphans at the Dupnitsa Children’s Home in Bulgaria. Landon (11), Lyndsie and Makinsey (10) Williams gave these hues new meaning.

The brother and twin sisters decided that they themselves were going to make a difference in Bulgaria when they came with their parents, Don and Nancy Williams, on a mission trip to Bulgaria. Mom and Dad taught at the Sofia Pentecostal Bible College, but the kid’s focus was ministry to kids who did not know much about love, especially God’s love.

One Saturday, the Williams family, missionary Kevin Beery and his 4-year-old daughter, Laura, and a team from the Bible College loaded up their van and jeep and headed to Dupnitsa, a small town 40 miles from Sofia. At the orphanage, the children gathered to see the puppet show and other special activities prepared by the Bible College students and the Williams family.

Makinsey, Landon, Lyndsie, and IvanThe most powerful moment was when Landon, Lyndsie and Makinsey distributed the Gospel bracelets they had brought from their home church, Fort Wayne First Assembly of God in Indiana, where Don and Nancy both serve. The young people proceeded to explain the bracelets to the kids in the audience. The bright intertwined bands represent various truths of the Gospel, such as white for God’s holiness, black for man’s sinfulness, red for Christ’s cleansing blood. All three children mentioned that it was a privilege to present God’s love to kids that needed to hear it. Lyndsie, who feels called to be a missionary, Makinsey, and Landon also had the chance to just play ball with the orphans, and found out that they are really just regular kids. . Makinsey noticed that the children’s rooms looked like normal rooms, and the orphans even had clothes that had American slogans on them.

“The orphanage was very open to this presentation, since young people like the Williams children are not threatening” missionary Kevin Beery later said. Though no public call was made for salvation decisions, there is the assurance that God’s Word and salvation truth will produce fruit, especially as the Bible College continues its long-established relationship with this orphanage. Landon noticed that the children were quite attentive during the Gospel bracelet message.

The Bible College’s previous trips have included puppet teams, special music, gifts, and humanitarian aid delivery. Bulgarian orphanages are inadequately funded, so nutritious food, medicines, basic hygiene supplies, and sufficient clothing are rarely provided for the orphans. With the help of the Assemblies of God, the Dupnitsa orphanage has been able to do some remodeling in the dorm rooms and restrooms, providing more comfortable surroundings for these children who have lost their parents by death or abandonment.
