"STOFFI" AND KIDSCLUB

April 6, 2009

AGWM Steve and China Walent are church planters based in Dresden, Germany.  Members of the Oasis Church, a part of their ministry, are involved in Kidsclub.  This is a branch of “Stoffi”, a ministry in Dresden reaching out to many kids. It was started by Sabine Ball in 1993. Sabine survived the bombing of Dresden in 1945, then immigrated to the U.S. There she married a millionaire, later got a divorce and then gave her life to Christ. She ministered in California helping hippies get their lives back on track. When she was 67 years old, God called her to go back to Dresden to reach out to kids whose home environment was so bad that they preferred living on the streets. She obeyed, and the ministry she founded is truly amazing.

Sabine is now 82 years old, and although she has turned the leadership of the ministry over to others, one still can find her among kids, ministering and loving them.  Kidsclub works together with local churches and offers a weekly program for children in various parts of Dresden where social problems are high. The kids hear a radical Gospel message through drama, puppets, fun and games.

The Oasis church has worked with Kidsclub for about 3 years. Every Thursday afternoon the program is held on a playground during the warm months and in the Oasis during the cold months. Lately 30-40 kids have been coming every week - all from “unchurched” families living in the high rises all around. Parents come too, and while waiting for their kids, are hearing the Gospel as well. Recently they organized a grill party and invited parents to come. About 35-40 kids were there and around 20 parents.

A little girl that comes to Kidsclub had a tumor on her spine and was scheduled for surgery. Her Mom agreed to letting the need be mentioned in the Oasis and we prayed for her. After the last check up the doctors said that they did not need to preform surgery.  Though the parents are still hesistant to tell the Kidsclub workers everything about the situation, the girl´s Mom is very open to the Lord and now attends the Alpha Course in the Oasis. It was wonderful seeing the girl jumping rope and having fun at the last Kidsclub.

The Walents are assisting the Kidsclub on many Thursdays, just hanging out with the kids and building relationships with the parents.  Their oldest daugher, Anika, is doing a half a year internship there as part of a program with her school. The church has prayed for new contacts with people in Gorbitz, and here the Lord is giving a great opportunity. Recently Save Europe’s Children, through a generous donation, made it possible for Kidsclub to improve their portable sound system.
