Friday nights find Dan and Silvana Place, Assemblies of God missionaries, on the streets of Alcala de Henares, Spain. Their goal is to bring the good news of salvation through Jesus to a lost and dying world, using whatever method works. Previously they had found that when they would stop people on the street, people would be hesitant to talk, but now, they do something to draw a crowd. People may remember little of just a verbal message, but if they also see something unusual along with it, they probably won't forget it. What's even more unusual, is someone standing on a box in the middle of the street, holding up an object, perhaps an hour glass, a dry erase board, or a flashlight. The Place's find it quite amazing how they can share the gospel in this way. Jesus is their example for He taught the people of His day with things they could relate to.
Recently, a young man from the States was with Dan and Silvana. He got up on the box and held up both of his wrists wrapped in a big, shiny chain. He talked about sin and about being in bondage. Then he shared his personal experience of how God had delivered him from his "chains", the bondage that held him. He told the crowd that God wanted them to be free from the sins that bound their lives. As he finished his last sentence, this young man dropped the chain to the sidewalk. The sound was like thunder. One could easily relate the breaking of those material chains to the breaking of "spiritual" chains which hold lives captive.
In the crowd that had gathered was a man who had just been released from jail and was on probation. The Places were able to talk with him for quite some time, sharing the good news of freedom in Jesus Christ with him. Another man in the crowd also talked with them for close to an hour. When others stood up on the box to share a message, he would listen to them. Finally, the man was ready for Silvana to pray with him and lead him to accept the Lord into his life.
Dan Place states, "Every week we encounter many people from different walks in life. Jesus died for every one of them. There are many people to be reached in this world."
