One Response to Terrorism

From AGWM Personnel, Jacob Bock...Monday the 15th of March, Madrid, Spain

Terrorist bombs shook Madrid last Thursday. People are full of fear and rage. At the same time, they are very vulnerable and sensitive. What could I do to minister to people in this situation?

I printed a list of the names of the 200 victims on six pieces of paper. I also prepared posters with the words RAGE, HELPLESSNESS, FEAR, and PAIN.

About 25 others joined me as we met at Plaza SOL, just blocks away from the bombings. A memorial had been set up in the plaza. Candles and handwritten messages lined the sidewalk. We placed ourselves next to the memorial and 10 of my helpers held the signs up. A crowd gathered in silence. People looked at the names of the dead. They identified with the emotions written on the posters.

I faced the crowd and addressed them. "We are gathered here today to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism. We are here today to pray for their families. When we are helpless, we must call out to the one who can help. This is a time of prayer. For those of you that would like, I invite you to kneel."

Our workers knelt down and others around them immediately dropped to their knees. Three of us took turns praying out loud. When we finished we said the "Lord's Prayer." People stood up and clapped. Some came to us and thanked us. Two Muslim men were in the front row kneeling. When they got up they were both crying. They approached me and said they were sorry for all that had happened and thanked me for the prayers. A Polish man wept. His brother-in-law who was killed in the bombing, left a wife and five children.

We repeated this two more times that day. The television cameras filmed us at one point. The Lord directed as our prayers and team of workers had an obvious impact on many who were traumatized in Madrid.

Keep praying for these Monday night outreaches. This is a God thing!
