REACHING STUDENTS IN EUROPE

June 20, 2006

SFC Conference
Nearly 250 students from 15 nations gathered in Nuremburg, Germany for a European Students for Christ (SFC) conference. They represented 35 European colleges and universities. Students for Christ is a ministry sponsored by the Assemblies of God World Missions with the goal of introducing university students to a life centered on Jesus Christ. Students were touched by the speakers and encouraged through the workshops, says DeanneSFC group Turley, who with her husband, Steve, directs Students for Christ in Brussels, Belgium. Virginia Contreras, missionary to Argentina and a leader of Students for Christ in Latin America, was the featured speaker.

Although most students who attended were already believers in Jesus, two young adults accepted Christ as their Savior. Several also received the Holy Spirit into their lives as described in the book of Acts in the Bible.

Many students testified of God's intervention in their lives in various ways. One student was at the point of suicide when he came to the conference but later said, "I'm happier than ever and take pleasure only in the presence of God." A young woman said, "I realized that I was giving 70 percent of myself to God and 30 percent to the devil. I now want to serve God 100 percent." Yet another said, "I realized that my job is to testify to others about Jesus. It's God's job to transform lives by the power of His Holy Spirit."

The Turleys also relate concerning a party they attended for one of the SFC satellite groups. This group meets each Monday night for prayer and Bible study at their nursing school on the north side of Brussels. Joëlle, Françoise and three other members of the Bible study group welcomed over 40 non-Christian students from Belgium, France, Italy and as far away as Haiti, Africa and Belarus. After a meal and games, a message of the healing love of God was presented through drama and the students were invited to give their interpretation of the mime. Afterward, as the girls were cleaning up, several came to them asking for more information about God and the meaning of this drama.

Although the nursing school is officially affiliated with the Free University of Brussels (ULB), an atheistic university, the good reputation and faithfulness of these students has given them favor with the administration of the school. They even have the privilege of using a room on campus in which to hold their weekly meetings. This year Joëlle and Francoise prayed about someone to take charge of the group after they graduate this spring. God sent them Liddie and Lili, two first-year students with a heart to reach out with the message of Christ to the rest of the students on campus.
