Hilversum International Christian Center (HICC) in the Netherlands hosted a banner weekend of record-breaking events nearly one year to the day after opening its doors to the public. On Saturday prior to Easter Sunday, its second annual Easter Egg Hunt drew an eager crowd of over 440 men, women and children to pick up 8000 eggs, do crafts, play games, and have fun. AGWM missionary and pastor of HICC, Robby Bradford stated, "We were stunned by the turnout, as HICC continues to create visibility and a reputation for love, generosity and authenticity. We saw two international families from our neighborhood (Polish-South African and American) who have never been to the church. A Dutch diplomat to Africa commented how he couldn’t believe that the warmth, relaxed atmosphere and generosity were the efforts of a church." HICC is making strides in overcoming the negative attitudes that many have towards Christianity and Christian churches.
On Easter Sunday, 480 people filled the building for dynamic worship and a festive atmosphere. A message preached by Bradford entitled “So What?”, focused on the significance of the resurrection of Jesus. The turnout of people gives an indication of the ever-expanding circle of people that HICC has the privilege to impact in the community. Slowly but surely, people of all kinds are getting the clear message that Christianity is far from dead and that the future for the community that Jesus started looks so much different than the misconceptions they have lived with!
This past Easter celebration in Hiversum was an exciting development in the ongoing story of what God is doing in Europe a place which many had written off as hopelessly secular. The news that Jesus is risen is a message that is ringing out loud and clear!
